[Nathan Haltiwanger] is strong and tender with a voice so solidly under control it’s striking.

American baritone Nathan Haltiwanger has been recognized for his striking performances in both opera and musical theatre. He can currently be seen as Freddy Eynsford-Hill in the North American tour of Lincoln Center Theatre’s critically-acclaimed production of Lerner & Loewe’s My Fair Lady.

Born and raised in Setauket, New York, Nathan received his bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance and Music Education from Ithaca College and his master’s degree in Opera and Musical Theatre Performance from Arizona State University. Shortly after completing his bachelor’s degree, Nathan joined Opera Ithaca as a Young Artist where he appeared as Masetto in Don Giovanni and understudied the title role in the world premiere of Bonnie Montgomery’s Billy Blythe. While pursuing his graduate degree, Nathan had the opportunity to perform in several workshops of new works and world premieres including Ellen Reid and Roxie Perkin’s Pulitzer Prize winning opera Prism with Beth Morrison Projects and Theo Popov and Tony Asaro’s The Halloween Tree with the American Lyric Theatre. In 2020, Nathan performed as several daters in the opening performance of Speed Dating Tonight! with FMO before COVID-19 forced the production to close. Nathan returned to Fargo-Moorhead Opera in 2021 as a Gate City Bank Young Artist where he made role debuts as Dax and Client in Robert Patterson’s Three Way, sang Fiorello and covered Figaro in The Barber of Seville, and helped to reimagine their outreach program with digital performances for local schools. Following his residency in Fargo, Nathan appeared as the blinds installer in Lowbrow Opera Collective’s production of Windows. During the 2022 season, Nathan made his professional role debut as Papageno in The Magic Flute with Opera Fort Collins.

In spring of 2019, Nathan made his regional musical theatre debut as Dr. Madden/Fine in the Empire Theatre Company’s production of Next to Normal. The following summer he appeared as Freddy in My Fair Lady with Ozark Actors Theatre where a critic remarked: “I think every person who has ever loved love swooned as [Nathan] sang, ‘On the Street Where You Live.’ It seemed as though notes flowed effortlessly out of his mouth and into our hearts, our very bones, as he serenaded us with his rich baritone. It was hands-down my favorite performance of that song ever. I might still be swooning, honestly.” In 2019, Mr. Haltiwanger appeared as Prince Topher in the Springer Opera House’s production of Rodger and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. In summer of 2021, Nathan could be seen as Stephen Kodaly in Quisisana Resort’s production of She Loves Me. Nathan finished his 2021 season by returning to the Springer Opera House where he could be seen as Ash in Evil Dead the Musical. In the summer of 2022, Nathan was in residency at the Utah Shakespeare Festival, where he made his role debut as Antony in Sweeney Todd as well as appearing in The Sound of Music and King Lear.
